Then & now

How Air Conditioning
Changed the World

In the 1950s, air conditioning was a revolutionary new technology that promised to change how people lived and worked. It did exactly that — and in the 70 years since, the technology has transformed beyond recognition.

● REC
1954

From Novelty
to Necessity

This 1954 RCA promotional film introduced the American public to domestic air conditioning — a technology so new that companies needed to explain what it was and why anyone would want it. The "Heart of Cold" compressor was a selling point. The idea of sleeping comfortably in summer was radical.

Today, air conditioning and ventilation are fundamental to how buildings function — not just for comfort, but for compliance, health, productivity, energy efficiency and the integrity of processes that can't tolerate temperature variation.

1954 — Then
  • Window-mounted room coolers
  • Single-speed compressors, no control
  • Loud, energy-hungry, basic
  • Luxury domestic novelty item
  • No regulation or certification
2026 — Now
  • Inverter VRF systems, smart-zoned control
  • SCOP ratings above 5.0 — heating & cooling
  • Near-silent, Wi-Fi enabled, app-controlled
  • Legal compliance requirement above 12kW
  • F-Gas regulation, REFCOM certification
30 years of this evolution — first-hand. Current Development has been designing, installing and maintaining HVAC systems since 1996. We've witnessed every significant shift in technology and regulation — and we keep our knowledge current. Ask us about the most efficient systems available today.
Where we are now

70 Years of
Extraordinary
Progress.

What took an entire building to achieve in 1954 now fits on a wall, runs almost silently, heats and cools simultaneously, monitors its own performance, and can be controlled from the other side of the world. Modern HVAC is one of the most significant technological transformations of the last century.

The technology today

What Modern Systems
Can Actually Do

🌡️
Inverter VRF Technology
Variable Refrigerant Flow systems simultaneously heat some zones and cool others from a single outdoor unit — recovering waste heat from one area and redirecting it where it's needed. No energy wasted. Precise control in every room.
30–40% energy saving vs conventional
📱
Smart & Wi-Fi Control
Modern systems connect to your smartphone, building management system or voice assistant. Monitor temperature, energy use and system health remotely. Automated scheduling adjusts based on occupancy, weather forecasts and time of day.
Control from anywhere in the world
🌿
Low-GWP Refrigerants
New regulations require a transition away from older high-GWP refrigerants. Modern systems run on R32 and R454B — refrigerants with a fraction of the environmental impact of previous generations, without compromising performance.
R32 — GWP of 675 vs 2,088 for R410A
💨
MVHR — Heat Recovery Ventilation
Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery continuously supplies fresh filtered air while recovering up to 95% of the heat from outgoing stale air. Dramatically reduces heating costs while improving indoor air quality — critical for health, compliance and comfort.
Up to 95% heat recovery efficiency
🔬
Precision Process Cooling
Manufacturing and pharmaceutical facilities require climate control accurate to within fractions of a degree. Modern close-control systems maintain critical environments 24/7, with redundancy and monitoring that protect product integrity and regulatory compliance.
±0.1°C tolerance in critical environments
🔋
Heat Pump Heating & Cooling
Air source heat pumps provide both heating and cooling from a single system, operating efficiently even at -15°C outdoor temperature. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers grants of up to £7,500. Running costs can be 50–70% lower than gas heating when properly specified.
Up to 500% efficiency (COP 5.0)

The Industry Timeline —
And Where We Fit In

Current Development has been operating throughout one of the most significant periods of transformation in HVAC history. We haven't just watched these changes — we've worked through every one of them.

1954
The Window Unit Era
RCA and other American manufacturers introduce domestic window-mounted air conditioning. Loud, inefficient, single-speed compressors. Air conditioning is a novelty — a luxury item for the wealthy. The "Heart of Cold" compressor is a marketing headline.
1970s–80s
Commercial Adoption
Split systems emerge. Air conditioning becomes standard in commercial buildings, offices and hotels across the UK. The industry professionalises. Refrigerant regulations begin to take shape following the discovery of CFC damage to the ozone layer.
Current Development founded
1996
Current Development Established
Jim Kitson establishes Current Development Ltd, initially trading from 1996 and incorporated in 1997. The company immediately begins delivering commercial HVAC contracts across retail, hospitality and office fit-out sectors in London and the South East.
2000s
VRF & Large-Scale Projects
VRF technology matures and becomes the system of choice for large commercial projects. Current Development delivers contracts into six figures — hotels, retail fit-outs, commercial office buildings and public sector projects including healthcare and education.
2006–2015
F-Gas Regulation & Smart Systems
European F-Gas regulations introduce mandatory certification for refrigerant handling. REFCOM registration becomes a legal requirement. Smart thermostats and BMS integration become standard on commercial projects. Current Development maintains REFCOM registration throughout.
2020–2023
Post-Pandemic Air Quality Focus
COVID-19 creates unprecedented demand for ventilation upgrades in schools, offices and healthcare settings. MVHR and air quality systems move from specialist to mainstream. Current Development's ventilation capability becomes a core service offering.
Where we are now
2026
Heat Pumps, Low-GWP & Smart Buildings
R410A phase-out. Boiler Upgrade Scheme grants. AI-driven building management. Heat pumps standard in new construction. Current Development continues delivering across all sectors — from manufacturing process cooling to domestic heat pumps — with 30 years of unbroken trading history behind every job.
Wellbeing & air quality

Climate Control
Has Health Consequences

The quality of the air you breathe and the temperature of your environment has a documented impact on health. For many people, the right HVAC system is not a comfort decision — it is a health necessity.

🧠
Multiple Sclerosis
MS affects the myelin sheath of nerves, making sufferers acutely sensitive to heat. Temperature control through air conditioning is a clinically recognised strategy for managing symptom flare-ups, endorsed by the MS Society.
🫁
Asthma & Allergies
MVHR systems filter up to 95% of airborne dust, pollen and allergens from incoming air. For asthma and hay fever sufferers, a properly specified ventilation system significantly reduces indoor trigger exposure year-round.
🌿
Respiratory Conditions
Urban air quality in South East London is a documented concern. HVAC systems with quality filtration protect indoor environments from external pollutants, particulates and allergens — important for COPD, bronchitis and general respiratory health.
💧
Damp & Mould-Related Illness
Poorly ventilated buildings trap moisture, creating conditions for mould growth that directly causes respiratory problems. MVHR systems continuously extract moisture at source, eliminating the conditions that allow mould to develop.
"My husband suffers quite severely with Multiple Sclerosis. After research with the MS Society we discovered that air conditioning can relieve symptoms. Jim visited us, understood our needs and installed a system that works very well. He is much more comfortable now in the summer months."
— Mrs A. Irvin, Kent — Current Development customer

Did you know?

Under the UK Boiler Upgrade Scheme, grants of up to £7,500 are currently available towards air source heat pumps. Air-to-air heat pumps — which provide both heating and cooling — are also expected to become eligible for a grant. We can advise on eligibility at no charge.

Are you compliant?

F-Gas & HVAC
Compliance Checker

Answer four questions to assess whether your air conditioning system is likely to be legally compliant with current F-Gas and inspection requirements.

Does your air conditioning system contain more than 3kg (or 5 tonne CO₂e equivalent) of refrigerant?
Has your system been serviced by a REFCOM-registered engineer within the last 12 months?
Do you hold a current F-Gas leak check certificate and maintenance logbook for each system?
If your system is over 12kW and more than 3 years old, has it had a TM44 inspection (required by law)?

Why Compliance Matters

UK F-Gas regulations place legal obligations on operators of air conditioning systems containing fluorinated gases. Non-compliance can result in Environment Agency enforcement, warranty invalidation and liability if equipment failure causes losses.

As a REFCOM-registered contractor, Current Development carries out all legally required leak checks, maintenance records and certification — with all documentation produced in-house.

F-GASUK F-Gas Regulations 2015 require regular leak checks and certified maintenance records for systems above 3kg refrigerant charge.
TM44AC systems over 12kW must undergo a TM44 energy inspection by a qualified assessor at least every 5 years.
REFCOMOnly REFCOM-registered companies may legally handle, recover and recharge fluorinated refrigerants in the UK.
WARRANTYMost manufacturer warranties require documented PPM visits at specified intervals — missing records may void your warranty.

About us

Built on Three
Decades of Doing
Things Properly.

Current Development Ltd was established in 1996 and incorporated in 1997. In the 30 years since, we have delivered HVAC and building services contracts ranging from a single domestic split system to multi-unit commercial installations — across retail, hospitality, healthcare, education, industrial manufacturing and commercial fit-out sectors.

We are not a large company. We are a specialist one. The same experienced engineer who surveys your project installs it, commissions it and maintains it. That accountability — and the continuity it creates — is something larger contractors cannot structurally offer.

Our in-house capability extends beyond the tools. We produce all compliance documentation — risk assessments, method statements, COSHH assessments and F-Gas records — using our own systems, ensuring every project is properly documented from day one.
